How I started growing vegetables: One urban farmer’s journey By Nasifu Abdallah
Twenty-three-year-old Sserunjogi Ashraf, a resident of Mutungo, a Kampala suburb, belonged to a group of friends, who engaged in activities he did not approve of. In fact, he
says many of them were eventually arrested by authorities. He says he later discovered that many of the group members would rob people. With the knowledge he gathered about the activities of many of his group members, he decided to cut ties with them. It was at this point that Sserunjogi was invited by a friend to attend a community youth programme that was organised by the Network for Active Citizens, to bring youth issues to the attention of policy makers. The activities, such as agripreneurship, climate caravans and community youth parliament, have enabled Sserunjogi to transform into a great urban farmer. He was able to set up his garden of 80 planters with over 700 plants, where he earns sh25,000 per week from his harvests.Twenty-three-year-old Sserunjogi Ashraf, a resident of Mutungo, a Kampala suburb, belonged to a group of friends, who engaged in activities he did not approve of.
