Transforming Community Spaces for Climate Resilience By Hope Mutesi

Slum urban areas like Kunya community are faced with numerous challenges in the fight against climate change such as the growing populations, congestion, and the increased of informal settlements and more. These are often worsened by issues involving poor waste management, air pollution, food insecurity along with the degradation of natural ecosystems. All of these continue to significantly affect the livelihoods and well being of people living in such communities. These impacts usually worsened during climate related events such as flooding and heat waves. As a result, such communities are highly vulnerable to the climate change related hazards and risks.

In a bid to strengthen community-based resilience efforts and young people’s adaptive capacity in Kunya community, Afrikovation Hub with support from Network for Active Citizens cocreated a community youth green space together with young people. What was once an underutilized space has now become a thriving community green space. This initiative is not just a green space but it is also knowledge hub working towards empowering young people with the skills and knowledge needed to combat the effects of climate change and strengthen their resilience towards climate change.

The Kunya community youth green space is more than just an urban garden; it is a dynamic learning hub where young people gather to engage in climate action initiatives like urban farming, climate advocacy, waste recycling, water harvesting among others. Through hands-on training in urban farming, waste management, and other climate adaptation techniques, the space is equipping youth with practical hands-on skills to address food insecurity and improve their livelihoods through income generation.

The green space is made up of a community demonstration urban garden and an innovative sitting longue for the young people. Here young people are trained in innovative climate resilient farming techniques such as vertical gardening, sack farming, and drip irrigation. These climate-smart approaches not only maximize limited space but also ensure a sustainable and cost-effective way of producing different garden produce like tomatoes. This demonstration garden is an inspiration to the youth, where they are not only appreciating the usage of the locally available resources for food production but also income generation. According to Brian Mukasa, a young participant, "this green space has provided me with skills on how to grow different crops in sacks and used plastics has helped me start my own small garden at home, which now provides vegetables for my family."

Additionally, the green space serves as a platform for community engagement through youth parliaments and dialogues on climate resilience and other community issues. The green space brings together youth, community leaders and other stakeholders who then engage in discussions on different climate change impacts that continue to affect the community and how these can be overcome. These discussions provide a crucial opportunity for young people to voice their concerns, share innovative solutions, and advocate for policies that support climate action in Kunya and beyond. Amina Namutebi, an active participant, shares, "Through the youth parliaments, we have gained a sense of confidence and learned how to engage our leaders and push for better waste management practices in our community."

The impact of the green space is already visible in the community. Community members of Kunya have access to fresh vegetables like tomatoes, spinach and Sukuma wiki grown within their community, at a relatively cheaper price. Young people who have so far undergone training on climate smart urban farming are applying their knowledge in their households and even venturing into agripreneurship thereby earning an income from their produce. Moreover, the greenspace has birthed a sense of community ownership towards the GhettoGoGreen project, with community members actively participating in maintaining and expanding the green space.

As climate change impacts continue to threaten vulnerable communities like kunya, the Kunya community youth green space stands as powerful example of grassroots climate adaptation initiative. As a learning hub, the green space is empowering young people and also contributing to greening the community whilst strengthening community climate resilience. The success of this green space in Kunya serves as an inspiration for other similar communities that are vulnerable to climate change effects.
